How long have you been in business?
I designed my first home in 1973, hope that doesn't make me sound too old. It has always been a passion of mine, but one that was only part-time until 2005 when Gary D Brackins & Associates became my full-time profession.
What is your primary product or service?
We provide residential design services for custom homes, additions, renovation, garage and decks. Unlike most designers we are experienced at flood hazard and high wind construction, as well as structural design. We have experience with Zoning regulations, wetlands regulations, Board of Health and Board of Appeals issues. We provide designs meeting the new building code requirements for high winds.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I grew up in a small town in South Florida. My Dad was a general contractor and I wanted to be an architect and work with him. I ended up in engineering instead and moved to Massachusetts in 1997. In 1999 I became involved with a custom home builder when he came into our office needing structural design on a home he was building. He was so impressed with my work he asked me to design all of his homes and they rest as they say is history.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
One-on-one personal service and attention to detail. I work with my clients to see that their dream becomes a reality. We're so passionate about our profession that we provide a free no-obligation consultation with clients to discuss their project and provide recommendations.
I believe that construction drawings shouldn't just be pretty pictures, but detailed to explain to the builder how assemblies should go together, especially with the new high wind requirements. Most builders are not experienced at high wind construction so you must have everything detailed so the builder can learn how to build it right. I got a call recently from a local lumber yard letting me know how much they appreciated my drawings. Everything they needed to know was specified on the drawings, and they had never seen such detailing. They were impressed that I actually had all of the high wind requirements detailed so that the builder as well as the supplier could understand how everything went together. It's always a pleasure getting good feedback on my work.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Our office is located in Mattapoisett in the Village. We are centrally located for our area, which is from Rhode Island to the Cape and up to the South Shore.
What are your hours of operation?
Our normal office hours are 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. We are available for evening and weekend meetings with clients by appointment. It is usually best for clients to call for an appointment as we are sometimes out of the office on project sites.
